Rumours abound that David Beckham could become president of Malaga FC

A strange exchange of shares could make David Beckham the new president of Málaga football club. It is well known that the current owner wants to offload his shares in the club and could have offered them to the ex-Real Madrid player in exchange for shares that Beckham owns in two Arab football clubs.

Malaga fans could have a world famous president. According to a report in the Los Angeles Times David Beckham could acquire 75% of the shares together with the American ex footballer and former president of Los Angeles Galaxy, Alexia Lalas.

However, Moayad Shatat, executive vice president of the Malaga club, said he is not aware of the operation, although the news has spread like wildfire over the Internet on fan forums.

It has also been reported that the initials MFC, apart from standing for Malaga Football Club could have been confused with MFC in America, a financial corporation called Malaga Bank.

All of this may come to absolutely nothing, but if there is any truth in the rumours, Beckham certainly would be the person to put Malaga club definitely on the map, especially in the light of Malaga’s up and coming season in the Champions League.

Spain Football Results – 21st August 2012

Spain’s La Liga kicked off at the week-end with games over three days, marked by certain controversy as some games were played at 11.00 pm, to suit TV schedules.

This move was not popular with players or fans and will only be repeated once more next week-end, thereafter returning to normal playing times ( at least, for Spain!)

Málaga played the first game of the season, winning 0-1 away, the goal scored by the youngest player ever to do so in the league and also on his debut for Málaga, the Cameroon player, 16-year-old Fabrice Olinga.

Barcelona got off to a great start with their new coach, winning 5-1 against Real Sociedad. On the other hand, Real Madrid let slip a victory at home, only being able to draw 1-1 with Valencia.

There was a cracker opening game in Bilbao where the home side went down 3-5 to Betis.

Malaga FC to play Panathinaikos in the play-off for Champions

This morning’s draw for the Champions league play-off sees Málaga pitched against Panathinaikos in a 2-way leg starting in Málaga with the return match in Athens.

Given all the bad and unsettling news coming out of the club in recent days, this is by no means an easy match. Santi Cazorla has gone to Arsenal and their main forward, Rondon, to Rubin Kazan and Mathijsen may be transferred to Feyenoord. Furthermore, players have not been paid and their manager, Pellegrini, has stated that he will stay on for another season only if all players get paid what’s owed to them.

Málaga had a great end to last season, finishing in a Champion’s place in the Spanish league, and looking forward to what could be the best possible season in the history of the club. However, things have not gone well for the owner of the club who apart from his 5 year project to make Málaga a championship winning side, has had disappointments with other projects in the province including a new sporting complex and stadium for the club and a marina project in Marbella. Local planning laws and permissions have been slow in coming through together with reported personal financial problems for the owner of Málaga football club.

Certainly, the fans will feel that they have been let down, but let’s hope that reported new signings around the corner come to fruition and Málaga can approach the new season with confidence.

UPDATE:

Tickets for the Champions game are on sale from August 17th at the Rosaleda. Non-season ticket holders may purchase them from Saturday for prices ranging between 35 and 90 euros.

Norwich City F.C. visits Nerja in preparation for next Premier game

The team of the English Premier League, Norwich City FC, ranked in the middle of the table, chose the town of Nerja to continue their preparation in the Premier League and their next match against bottom of the league Wigan on Saturday, which will be broadcast on Sky Sports from four in the afternoon.

The team’s coach, Paul Lambert, who counts amongst his successes winning the Champions League in 1997 when he managed Borussia Dortmund and beat Juventus 3 – 1 in the final. In the ranks of the English team figures the Spaniard Daniel Ayala, who has played for Valencia and Liverpool.

The team was very satisfied with the sports facilities provided but the Nerja sports ground had to adapt to certain tastes and needs. The grass had to be cut as the northern European teams prefer shorter grass than those in the south of the continent.

The team, which will be in Nerja until Thursday, is staying at the Hotel Nerja Club, opposite the sports facilities, which today received a delegation headed by the Municipal Councilor for Sports and Tourism, José Alberto Tomé and Bernardo Pozuelo. Tome has welcomed the presence in Nerja of this team and after discussions, “is likely to visit Nerja next season without ruling out the possibility that other clubs in the Premier League also may come,” said the council member. In addition to the excellent facilities, “the British have also stressed the treatment received by the facility staff, stating they felt at home,” said the Council member for Sports.

Councilor for Tourism, Bernardo Pozuelo, stressed the importance of Nerja, “not only from a tourist point of view, but also from a sporting viewpoint, hosting elite teams such as Norwich City FC puts Nerja in the Premiership spotlight.”

The reason for the team’s presence in Nerja is Jeff Wood, the goalkeeping coach, who lived in the town for eight years. In addition to the facilities and the treatment received, the technician pointed out the weather and the value for money compared to other destinations in southern Europe where the team has trained in previous years.

Team members received some souvenirs of Nerja whilst the town hall was presented with an autographed shirt.
