Torrevieja is situated at the southern end of the Spain’s Costa Blanca; about 40 minutes drive from Alicante’s International airport and has a population of around 100,000.
Originally a salt mining and fishing village, today Torrevieja is a thriving tourist resort offering all year round residency to its International clientele including the British, Irish, Germans and Scandinavians.
The town offers a wide selection of accommodation of hotels and residential holiday complexes overlooking its long promenade and sandy beaches of La Mata, El Cura, Los Locos, El Acequión and Los Náufragos. There are many leisure facilities including a large municipal sports complex with an Olympic sized indoor heated swimming pool, two outdoor pools, and an athletics and football stadium, all of which can be freely used for a small fee. An auditorium with 2,000 seats hosts periodical concerts.
Various commercial centres offer an abundance of shops, boutiques, bars and restaurants, one of which in Habaneras has a cinema complex, crazy golf, bowling alley and the Aqualandia Water Park. The nearest golf courses can be found in Villamartin, Las Ramblas and Campoamor. For scuba diving, try Scubaworld at nearby Orihuela.
In the heart of the town you’ll find the town hall, the tourist office, day and night markets that are particularly busy on a Friday with over a 1,000 stalls, the indoor market open daily where you can buy fresh produce of fish, meat, fruit and vegetables, the municipal theatre, and a tourist train to show you around.
The Puerto Deportivo Marina Internacional has berths for small boats and yachts as well as offering excursions to the nearby island of Tabardo in catamarans in which you can observe the sea bed. For lovers of ecological tourism who may be seeking a cure for rheumatic problems, then a visit to the lakes of La Mata is essential where a mudbath is recommended.
Nightlife in Torrevieja is plentiful with over 100 bars and disco pubs, mainly concentrated in the El Baluarte area in La Punta, and includes the internationally renowned macro-discotheque Pachá. For diners, there are a wide variety of restaurants catering to all tastes.
You can visit some of the nearby towns of Cabo Roig, Dehesa de Campoamor and Torre Horadada as well as trek inland and discover some of the ventas where you can enjoy some of the local cuisine and wines.
Torrevieja offers a magnificent all year round climate with average, monthly summer temperatures peaking at 28º C, with the lowest of 13º C in winter.
