Competa is situated in the Axarquia region, a beautiful whitewashed Andalusian village amidst the majestic mountainscape of the Sierra Almijara.
The village has Moorish roots, evident in the style of the village, with its winding, narrow streets and peaceful squares.
Competa is located 20 kilometres north of the coastline from Algarrobo Costa or Torrox Costa, a car journey of half an hour and 53 kilometres form the centre of Malaga, about an hour’s drive away. With the coast close by, there is plenty of opportunity to experience the more contemporary side of Andalusia. The village has a population of 3,800 inhabitants, over half of them of foreign origin, and many of these are English.
The village commenced its expansion in the early eighties when land was very cheap resulting in many properties being built in the countryside surrounding it.
If you are looking for natural beauty then Competa and the Axarquia region are perfect for you.
The village is surrounded by olive groves and almond trees, which blossom in the spring. Competa is situated beside a 4,000 hectare wildlife reserve, which incorporates the Sierra Almijara, rising majestically to 2,000 metres above sea level.
The landscape leading down to the coast is filled with vineyards, olive and lemon groves, tropical fruits such as kiwi and mango, and views so sublime you will never want to leave. The area is particularly popular with wildlife enthusiasts and bird watchers, who come to marvel at the eagles that roam the skies.
The beaches along the coastline 20 kilometres to the south are some of the most beautiful that the province of Malaga has to offer.
Cuisine & Dining
Typical cuisine of the area consists of rice, seafood and meats, combined with delicious fresh, local vegetables. Competa has a number of cafés, restaurants and tapas bars to choose from, whether you fancy a formal or informal meal. In some of the more traditional tapa bars you can order a caña (small beer) or glass of Rioja and enjoy a free tapa. Due to the foreign influence in the village there are many restaurants offering a wide choice of different international cuisine.
Competa enjoys a sub-tropical Mediterranean climate of hot summers and warm winters with an average of 300 days of sun a year. The proximity to the sea affords cooling breezes in the summertime; the height of the mountains in the region are often snow-topped in the winter, a beautiful sight to behold in the far south of Europe.
