The 54th Nerja Caves Music Festival announces its program for summer 2013

The President of the Nerja Cave Foundation, Jorge Hernández Mollar, accompanied by the two vice presidents, José Alberto Armijo and Bendodo Elijah, and the manager, Angel Ruiz, today introduced the program in Fitur for the 54th International Festival of Music and Dance in the Caves of Nerja this summer.

The Festival will begin on Wednesday, July 24 (2013) with a concert by the classical string quartet of soloists of Salzburg, accompanied by renowned clarinetist Ferdinand Steiner. On Thursday 25th the Ballet of Victor Ullate will perform, which this year celebrates its 25 years of existence. On Friday the 26th will be the turn of singer Pastora Soler, Nerja’s Tourist of Honor, and will close with a concert by guitarist Manolo Sanlúcar together with the Malaga Symphony Orchestra performing the works of “Medea”.

In his speech, the mayor and vice president of the Foundation, José Alberto Armijo, stressed the importance this year that the cave has from a scientific point of view, as it could confirm that its paintings are the oldest artistic samples of Humanity. They also highlighted the artistic and cultural side, as this is the first time that the International Festival of Music and Dance has been presented in Fitur (Madrid). The mayor enthused about this year’s program and welcomed at the presentation the presence of both Pastora Soler and Manolo Sanlúcar. He also stressed that the official presentation of the festival will take place in Nerja in March.

In his speech, José Alberto Armijo has also announced he will request that the cave be declared part of the World Heritage. He also wished to thank the cooperation of other institutions such as the Provincial de Málaga.

The manager of the Foundation, Angel Ruiz, made mention to the careers of the artists who will perform this year at the Festival. Ferdinand Steiner is considered as one of the leading clarinetists in the world, currently a soloist with the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra. He will be accompanied by the Salzburg Soloists String Quartet, which will perform works by Mozart, Verdi, Bizet and Gershwin.

Victor Ullate, is famous for having received the National Dance Prize and Gold Medal of Fine Arts. He formed the company in 1988, and instilled his personality through his own choreography. This year he celebrates his silver anniversary and the dancers that have passed through his ranks and gone onto worldwide success, such as Tamara Rojo, Angel Corella and Igor Yebra. The art of dance is a journey of different styles accounting its evolution through history.

Pastora Soler, despite her youth, has enjoyed a long career. From her first album, released in 1994 until today, she has achieved three triple platinum disks and four gold. Last year, she represented Spain in the Eurovision Song Contest in September and was named Tourist of Honor for Nerja, 2012.

Finally, it was explained that the Festival will close with the first joint co-production with the Bienal de Flamenco de Málaga. The master guitarist Manolo Sanlúcar will offer the symphonic version of “Medea”, a piece created for the National Ballet in 1987. This time he will be accompanied by the Malaga Symphony Orchestra under the baton of renowned Italian, Carlo Palleschi, one of the most prestigious classical directors.

Tickets prices for all shows remain the same as last year, between 25 and 40 Euros, and will go on sale on the official website of the Caves of Nerja on the day of the official presentation of the Festival, which will take place in Nerja in March. Until then advance bookings can be made by email of the Foundation, admon@cuevadenerja.es

The Festival remains the most important promotional activity of the Caves, and has a budget of 230.000 Euros.

This year the production has been reduced to four performances, also eliminating the back stage dressing rooms, as recommended by the Scientific Council for the Foundation, in an aim to reduce the environmental impact that it has upon the caves.

Local foreign residents of Nerja are urged to renew their inscription at the Town Hall

Nerja Town Hall

The “Padron” is the official register of persons inscribed at the local town hall. The Nerja authorities are urging local foreign residents to re register.

This is very important, as according to the number of people registered, the Central Government gives grants to the Town Hall for services such as doctors, police, schools, social care, infrastructure, etc. The larger the registered population, the larger the grants. Also, you can obtain discounts on the local bus service, the municipal swimming pool and be entitled to other benefits.

Foreigners who are already registered and have been for more than 5 years must re register again. If in the past 2 years you have not made any modifications to your personal details, such as a change of address or change of passport number, you must come and re register by the end of December. Those who don’t will be removed from the Padron register. You will be receiving a letter from the Nerja Town Hall informing you of this.

If unsure, check that you are still on the Padron by going to the main reception of the Town Hall on the ground floor, Monday to Friday from 8 am to 13:30 pm with your NIE certificate and your passport (copies will be accepted). You can also go to the Foreigners Department Mondays and Thursdays.

Nerja’s sewage plant is finally approved

The mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo, has confirmed that the Ministry of Environment has awarded yesterday the contract for the sewage treatment plant for Nerja to the UTE Nerja-Corviam-Isolux Corsan consortium to the final amount of 23.245.036 Euros, VAT included. Most of this amount, 23.091.222 €, will be used for the execution of the work and the rest, 153.813 €, for the drafting of the project.

The mayor pointed out that the contract period is 30 months and the contract has been made public, a preliminary step by the State Contracts Act, so that the work can be tendered out.

Once that the contract has been agreed and signed, the Ministry of Environment has three months to present the final draft. Once approved technically, the work can commence.

The mayor noted that the award of the treatment plant in Nerja is “excellent news and shows that the Spanish Government is definitely committed to this important project for Nerja that will mean a major breakthrough from a point of view of the environment and tourism”. He also indicated that this decision for Nerja culminates in “an historic and political goal for the town, which for me is a very important achievement.”

In any case, the mayor made clear that there is still a way to go until the work can start. However he also noted that “he will continue with his efforts to make this a reality as soon as possible.”

Location in Fuente del Baden

Given this situation, the mayor pointed out that “from the opposition, all we hear is unwarranted criticism without any foundation, sowing doubts and poisoning public opinion about the lack of funds.”

In response to this criticism the mayor replied, as confirmed by the deputy director of economic planning – “If the Secretary of State has awarded this important project to Nerja it is because there are funds committed from the Ministry of Environment and funding is therefore guaranteed.”

So the mayor has called upon the PSOE and IU parties “to adopt a political position of responsibility and recognize that the Spanish Government has finally approved a key project for Nerja”.

The infrastructure will serve more than 100,000 inhabitants and will be located in the Fuente del Baden area, north of the main N-340 road, and occupy an area of 28.999 square meters.

Nerja Property Sales

Nerja is without doubt the most popular destination east of Malaga with an all year round climate, a comfortable and relaxed lifestyle, great communications – Málaga’s international airport is just 40 minutes drive along the motorway, Granada city and Sierra Nevada ski resort just over an hour away, and Nerja is renowned world wide for its famous Caves.

Unlike many coastal resorts in other parts of Spain, Nerja is open all year round. You can have lunch on the beach in Nerja on Christmas day as well as any other day of the year. The town is very manageable with a local population of around 26,000 people (registered) but which is slightly more due to many foreign residents who live temporarily during winter months.

Given the current economic climate and the fall in Spanish property prices, Nerja continues to attract buyers seeking a bargain. Not all visitors to Nerja however purchase a property, but rent one. Long term rentals, over a period of a standard eleven months are extremely popular of late as would-be buyers prefer to rent first, study the market and purchase later.

Naturally, Nerja is also a very popular holiday resort with a great selection of all types of accommodation, many beaches both in the town and along the scenic coastline surrounding the town.

There is a host of cozy restaurants offering all types of cuisine especially of course, fresh fish and tapas, many boutique shops, hotels and guest houses (hostals), banks, etc. There are all sorts of outdoor activities… visit the typically Spanish inland villages  such as Frigiliana and Competa, go hiking or cycling in the mountains, horse riding, fishing or just laze on the beach!
