New Ferry Service from Motril to Alhucemas in Morocco

Motril port continues to expand its maritime operations with a new Moroccan connection providing a daily ferry service from Motril to Alhucemas on the northern coast of Morocco, approximately half way between Ceuta and Melilla. This service to be provided by the shipping line, Naviera Armas.

This is an addition to the recent cruise trade that Motril port has embarked upon in conjunction with Ocean Cruises.

This new ferry service will provide an additional route across the Alboran Sea for both the Moroccans that travel to their country each summer, especially for Ramadan, and tourists from Spain wishing to explore the delights of Morocco. For those travelling from the north to southern Spain, Motril saves going the extra mile down to Algeciras or Tarifa to pick up the ferry.

All this extra maritime traffic will also boost local tourism in the area of the Costa Tropical and Costa del Sol with excursions to local towns and villages such as Almuñecar, La Herradura and Nerja.

Motril Port joins Málaga as a top cruise destination

Motril port in Granada now joins Málaga as a cruise destination for the Costa del Sol and Costa Tropical.

After many years of negotiations and improvements to the port, Motril authorities have signed an agreement with an American company, Ocean Cruises, to dock their ships starting this month with cruises planned up to October of this year. The first ship to arrive, the Riviera, was only completed a month ago and will complete cruises from around the Mediterranean and into the Atlantic and the Madeira Islands.

The arrival of these ships will create one day excursions to Granada and the Alhambra Palace, to local towns and villages such as Vélez de Benaudalla and the “Jardines Nazaríes”, the Nerja Caves and as far as Málaga itself. A wide variety of nationalities will be aboard these cruises from countries such as New Zealand, Italy, Canada, Israel, Belarus, Mexico, Cuba and the United States.

New Tourist Helicopter service now available in Motril Port

The port of Motril (Granada) now has a heliport operated by a private company based in the town, Tropicopter, which is the first in Andalusia to offer from this weekend, tourist helicopter flights at an affordable price of 60 Euros for a 1 hour excursion including the flight.

The owner, Antonio Mora, explained that the service will initially target tourist passengers arriving at the Motril port, given the interest that this type of tourism is experiencing on the Costa Tropical. In general, anyone who wishes to contract the services of this company, can enjoy views from the helicopter of the Alhambra, Sierra Nevada, Granada and Malaga coast, or north of the province.

Also Tropicopter offer the possibility of private pilot training and is open to provide other professional services, such as conducting aerial photographs, videos, documentaries, building control or emergencies.

The idea originated in Madrid some two years ago but has ended up being implemented in Motril, and the project, according to Mora, “has experienced difficulties” due to the complexity of implementing such a service in a port area, which is the third in Andalusia to be licensed, after Algeciras (Cádiz), which is public (AENA), and the Expo in Seville, privately owned, such as in Motril.

The company will also be the first to offer tourist flights by helicopter in Andalusia, and the second in Spain to do so within a port (there is one at the Barcelona Port directed at cruise passengers).

Tropicopter flights will have additional value insofar as all pre-flight information will be offered to the user in both English and Spanish before boarding, together with a description of the itinerary and flight characteristics, for those who may have a fear of flying. Also, the helicopter has an interior and exterior camera that records video and audio and given to the client after the flight, reminding them of the memorable and unique experience.

The first customers have already booked flights for this weekend, if weather permits, as Tropicopter helicopters embark on this new tourism attraction for the province of Granada.
