Malaga FC continues to make football history

Malaga football club seem to have no limits this season as they continue to break records in the Champions league and in the Spanish football league.

They have played 5 unbeaten games so far in Champions, two against Panathinaikos in order to qualify (1 draw and 1 win), and three games in the championship. They have won all 3 group games, scored 7 goals without receiving one!… and are clear leaders with 5 points difference to 7 times European champions, Milan! Malaga is only one of four teams ever to achieve such an impressive debut in the Champions league.

They are third in La Liga in Spain, only behind Barcelona and Atletico de Madrid, and ahead of Real Madrid.

Only three months ago Malaga was facing a very uncertain future as their owner Abdullah Al Ahmed Al Thani sold off some of their star players and threatened to sell the club as well. Since then, with the fantastic results that Malaga has achieved, the owner was present at La Rosaleda this week to witness Malaga’s historic 1-0 win over Milan. With probably just one more point from the three remaining group games, Malaga can qualify for the last sixteen.

All of their homes games are a sell-out. The local merchandisers outside of the ground now report record sales of Malaga’s kit, scarves and souvenirs, well ahead of Barcelona and Real Madrid!

Malaga fans can’t believe it as they see their team having the most successful season ever in their history. It’s also good for the image of Malaga… Spread the word!

Rumours abound that David Beckham could become president of Malaga FC

A strange exchange of shares could make David Beckham the new president of Málaga football club. It is well known that the current owner wants to offload his shares in the club and could have offered them to the ex-Real Madrid player in exchange for shares that Beckham owns in two Arab football clubs.

Malaga fans could have a world famous president. According to a report in the Los Angeles Times David Beckham could acquire 75% of the shares together with the American ex footballer and former president of Los Angeles Galaxy, Alexia Lalas.

However, Moayad Shatat, executive vice president of the Malaga club, said he is not aware of the operation, although the news has spread like wildfire over the Internet on fan forums.

It has also been reported that the initials MFC, apart from standing for Malaga Football Club could have been confused with MFC in America, a financial corporation called Malaga Bank.

All of this may come to absolutely nothing, but if there is any truth in the rumours, Beckham certainly would be the person to put Malaga club definitely on the map, especially in the light of Malaga’s up and coming season in the Champions League.

Malaga FC to play Panathinaikos in the play-off for Champions

This morning’s draw for the Champions league play-off sees Málaga pitched against Panathinaikos in a 2-way leg starting in Málaga with the return match in Athens.

Given all the bad and unsettling news coming out of the club in recent days, this is by no means an easy match. Santi Cazorla has gone to Arsenal and their main forward, Rondon, to Rubin Kazan and Mathijsen may be transferred to Feyenoord. Furthermore, players have not been paid and their manager, Pellegrini, has stated that he will stay on for another season only if all players get paid what’s owed to them.

Málaga had a great end to last season, finishing in a Champion’s place in the Spanish league, and looking forward to what could be the best possible season in the history of the club. However, things have not gone well for the owner of the club who apart from his 5 year project to make Málaga a championship winning side, has had disappointments with other projects in the province including a new sporting complex and stadium for the club and a marina project in Marbella. Local planning laws and permissions have been slow in coming through together with reported personal financial problems for the owner of Málaga football club.

Certainly, the fans will feel that they have been let down, but let’s hope that reported new signings around the corner come to fruition and Málaga can approach the new season with confidence.

UPDATE:

Tickets for the Champions game are on sale from August 17th at the Rosaleda. Non-season ticket holders may purchase them from Saturday for prices ranging between 35 and 90 euros.

Malaga airport inaugurates its second runway

Malaga airport’s second runway has finally opened, which will increase the capacity to deal with 65 flights an hour instead of 37, with just one runway.

The runway was opened on Tuesday by the government minister, Ana Pastor. She pledged that this investment in Malaga and the Costa del Sol was capable of generating 15 billion Euros in the surrounding areas. There is no doubt that this now makes Malaga’s airport one of the finest on mainland Spain, only behind those of Madrid and Barcelona.

The airport authorities will only use the second strip when required, especially in summer, but may be used much less in winter until demand picks up.

The mayor of Malaga, Francisco de la Torre, also reminded the minister of the pending AVE high speed train link from Malaga centre to the airport, which would make Malaga one of the best transport hubs in southern Spain.
