Travel High Speed from London to Malaga

The new and latest link in the Spanish AVE high speed train network was opened today between Barcelona and Figueres on the Spanish/French border. So now you can catch the high speed train from London to Paris, change for a train to the Spanish border, hop on the next stage to Barcelona, and finally change for the non-stop AVE link right the way though to Sevilla, Cordoba and Málaga in southern Spain.

The AVE is a very comfortable, clean and efficient way to travel and offers an alternative to flying and definitely to driving. With speeds up to 300 kms an hour, it’s a wonderful way to see the countryside whilst travelling in style. All comforts can be found on board with full catering facilities, Wi-Fi and PC computer connections, newspapers and magazines, in-train videos and music, 2 and 4 berth sleepers, private toilets and showers, and for business and first class passengers breakfast, a full 3-course lunch or dinner and drink service brought to your seat.

Travelling times:

Paris – Barcelona in six and a half hours.

Paris – Madrid in 10 hours.

Barcelona – Málaga (without changing in Madrid): five and a half hours.

The AVE service has been in operation in Malaga since 2007 and connects to Sevilla, Cordoba, Madrid, Valladolid, Valencia, Barcelona and Girona. There is also a section open in La Coruña which will eventually link up with Madrid as well as an extension from Málaga to Granada, currently under construction. Spain has today the biggest network of high speed trains in Europe.

Coastal plan to prevent building within 500m of the sea in Andalucia

A NEW decree aims to protect Andalucia’s coastline by preventing anyone building on the first 500m of land.

Under the coastal protection plan, launched this week, no new construction projects can be launched and all existing plans will need to go through rigorous tests to prove they are environmentally viable.

The decree will affect 52 town halls stretching over a thousand kilometres of coastline.

The aim is to halt construction of all projects that were planned during the property boom of the 80s and 90s, but are not compatible with today’s regulations.

Coastal plan to prevent building within 500m of sea in Andalucia.

LPG Spain comments:

This new proposal is all very well but after over forty years of booming construction in Spain, much of which is on the coast, it’s a bit late to bring such a measure into force. In many cases, the damage is already done.

Algarrobico – Almeria

However, better late than never! There still exists much coastline, outside of towns and villages, which is still virgin, some of it forming part of National Parks. But even despite this protection, some authorities in the past have tried to pass legislation allowing construction in these areas, one such example is the hotel that was built in Almeria in the Cabo de Gata-Nijar National Park, declared illegal and stopped in 2005 and which is still subject of a final demolition order.

Spain needs to clean its act up and protect remaining coastal regions from further construction contamination. In a round-about way, this could also at the same time add more value to existing property already built along Spain’s long coastline.

In a similar way inland, and since the introduction of a new law in 2001 by the Junta de Andalucia, drastically reducing the possibility of building in the countryside, prices of large property fair better as they cannot be built again.

Malaga FC continues to make football history

Malaga football club seem to have no limits this season as they continue to break records in the Champions league and in the Spanish football league.

They have played 5 unbeaten games so far in Champions, two against Panathinaikos in order to qualify (1 draw and 1 win), and three games in the championship. They have won all 3 group games, scored 7 goals without receiving one!… and are clear leaders with 5 points difference to 7 times European champions, Milan! Malaga is only one of four teams ever to achieve such an impressive debut in the Champions league.

They are third in La Liga in Spain, only behind Barcelona and Atletico de Madrid, and ahead of Real Madrid.

Only three months ago Malaga was facing a very uncertain future as their owner Abdullah Al Ahmed Al Thani sold off some of their star players and threatened to sell the club as well. Since then, with the fantastic results that Malaga has achieved, the owner was present at La Rosaleda this week to witness Malaga’s historic 1-0 win over Milan. With probably just one more point from the three remaining group games, Malaga can qualify for the last sixteen.

All of their homes games are a sell-out. The local merchandisers outside of the ground now report record sales of Malaga’s kit, scarves and souvenirs, well ahead of Barcelona and Real Madrid!

Malaga fans can’t believe it as they see their team having the most successful season ever in their history. It’s also good for the image of Malaga… Spread the word!

Malaga FC to play Panathinaikos in the play-off for Champions

This morning’s draw for the Champions league play-off sees Málaga pitched against Panathinaikos in a 2-way leg starting in Málaga with the return match in Athens.

Given all the bad and unsettling news coming out of the club in recent days, this is by no means an easy match. Santi Cazorla has gone to Arsenal and their main forward, Rondon, to Rubin Kazan and Mathijsen may be transferred to Feyenoord. Furthermore, players have not been paid and their manager, Pellegrini, has stated that he will stay on for another season only if all players get paid what’s owed to them.

Málaga had a great end to last season, finishing in a Champion’s place in the Spanish league, and looking forward to what could be the best possible season in the history of the club. However, things have not gone well for the owner of the club who apart from his 5 year project to make Málaga a championship winning side, has had disappointments with other projects in the province including a new sporting complex and stadium for the club and a marina project in Marbella. Local planning laws and permissions have been slow in coming through together with reported personal financial problems for the owner of Málaga football club.

Certainly, the fans will feel that they have been let down, but let’s hope that reported new signings around the corner come to fruition and Málaga can approach the new season with confidence.

UPDATE:

Tickets for the Champions game are on sale from August 17th at the Rosaleda. Non-season ticket holders may purchase them from Saturday for prices ranging between 35 and 90 euros.

Malaga airport inaugurates its second runway

Malaga airport’s second runway has finally opened, which will increase the capacity to deal with 65 flights an hour instead of 37, with just one runway.

The runway was opened on Tuesday by the government minister, Ana Pastor. She pledged that this investment in Malaga and the Costa del Sol was capable of generating 15 billion Euros in the surrounding areas. There is no doubt that this now makes Malaga’s airport one of the finest on mainland Spain, only behind those of Madrid and Barcelona.

The airport authorities will only use the second strip when required, especially in summer, but may be used much less in winter until demand picks up.

The mayor of Malaga, Francisco de la Torre, also reminded the minister of the pending AVE high speed train link from Malaga centre to the airport, which would make Malaga one of the best transport hubs in southern Spain.

San Juan Fiesta

Synonymous as the shortest night of the year in the northern hemisphere, the famous San Juan Fiesta comes around again coinciding with the week-end on the Eve of the fiesta on Saturday 23rd June.

Although celebrated throughout Spain, it has a much greater significance on the coast as everybody heads for the beach with their tents, BBQ’s, sound systems and enough food and drink to last a week!

There exists many traditions surrounding this special night, the most popular and practical though are those of jumping over the lit fires and making a special wish whilst dipping into the sea at midnight.

The party goes on all night, right around to breakfast and the entire following day. It’s a great spectacle and one of the many Spanish fiestas where everybody can join in. It’s also the only day in the year when local authorities allow camping overnight on the beach.

You’ll see partying along all the beaches east of Malaga through Torrox and Nerja (with Live music on the Burriana Beach from 10.00 pm.) and onto Almuñecar and Motril, and you’ll need to get their early to book a space on the beach!
