Malaga airport inaugurates its second runway

Malaga airport’s second runway has finally opened, which will increase the capacity to deal with 65 flights an hour instead of 37, with just one runway.

The runway was opened on Tuesday by the government minister, Ana Pastor. She pledged that this investment in Malaga and the Costa del Sol was capable of generating 15 billion Euros in the surrounding areas. There is no doubt that this now makes Malaga’s airport one of the finest on mainland Spain, only behind those of Madrid and Barcelona.

The airport authorities will only use the second strip when required, especially in summer, but may be used much less in winter until demand picks up.

The mayor of Malaga, Francisco de la Torre, also reminded the minister of the pending AVE high speed train link from Malaga centre to the airport, which would make Malaga one of the best transport hubs in southern Spain.

San Juan Fiesta

Synonymous as the shortest night of the year in the northern hemisphere, the famous San Juan Fiesta comes around again coinciding with the week-end on the Eve of the fiesta on Saturday 23rd June.

Although celebrated throughout Spain, it has a much greater significance on the coast as everybody heads for the beach with their tents, BBQ’s, sound systems and enough food and drink to last a week!

There exists many traditions surrounding this special night, the most popular and practical though are those of jumping over the lit fires and making a special wish whilst dipping into the sea at midnight.

The party goes on all night, right around to breakfast and the entire following day. It’s a great spectacle and one of the many Spanish fiestas where everybody can join in. It’s also the only day in the year when local authorities allow camping overnight on the beach.

You’ll see partying along all the beaches east of Malaga through Torrox and Nerja (with Live music on the Burriana Beach from 10.00 pm.) and onto Almuñecar and Motril, and you’ll need to get their early to book a space on the beach!

Nerja receives the “Q” for Quality Tourism Award for best beaches in Spain

Out of just 174 beaches throughout the whole of Spain, Nerja received this prestigious award for two of their beaches, the Burriana and the Torrecilla, from the Minister for Tourism and Energy, José Manuel Soria.

The “Q” for Quality Tourism Award is above the Blue Flag distinction, which is awarded to many more beaches throughout the country, and is the second time that Nerja has been honoured having been among the first 5 beaches ever to win when first awarded in 2004.

This level of excellence was created by and with the collaboration of the Ministry for Tourism, members of leading tourist organisations and holiday companies, autonomous governments and the Spanish Municipal and Provincial Federation.

By receiving such an award Nerja is complying with the highest standards of quality for their beaches and nautical installations, as laid down by requirements set by the “Q” Board.

It’s interesting to note that not a single Q ranking has been achieved on the western Costa del Sol.

Antena 3 TV, one of Spain’s leading commercial channels reported this news on their website, the video opening on the Burriana beach in Nerja:

Video in Spanish.
