Día de Andalucía – February 28

The date is a fiesta across the region of Andalucía

Today, February 28, is the Día de Andalucía, and is a fiesta in the region.

It marks the date in 1980 when a referendum was held on the Statute of Autonomy for the region, in which the people of Andalucía voted to become an autonomous community in Spain.

Many balconies will see the Andalucía flag on show today, and there are several annual competitions and fiestas held in towns and villages across the region. Many museums, such as the Granada Science Park, offer free entry today.

House prices down 35% according to Economy Minister

House prices in Spain have fallen 35% according to the Economy Minister, Luis de Guindos, based upon figures since the crisis started.

The main criticism, claims De Guindos, is that the banks only lend to buyers of their own re-possessed properties in preference to those seeking properties from other sources such as general estate agents and developers.

De Guindos has introduced new reforms forcing the banks to make bigger write-downs to bring price down further. These reforms appear to be having an immediate effect as would be buyers are now offering on average 30% less on asking prices.

Antonio Banderas to play Pablo Picasso in a new film “33 Days”

Antonio Banderas, the Spanish actor from Malaga, will star in a new film “33 Days” about the life of Pablo Picasso.

Both artists from Malaga were born just four blocks away from each other’s birthplace. The film will be about Guernica, one of Picasso’s most famous works. Banderas is today about the same age as when the artist painted it.

Banderas will play the part of Picasso and Gwyneth Paltrow will play Dora Maar, a French photographer, poet and painter, known for being Picasso’s lover and muse who took photographs of the various stages of the art work in Rue des Grands Augustins in Paris.

The film will be shot in Paris and Guernica (Euskadi), starting in August.

Sell your Spanish property in a day… if the price is right

If your asking price is right you will sell your property in a day argues José Luis Jimeno, Managing Director of Noteges, a leading Spanish property company.

You have nothing but your own unrealistic expectations to blame if your property doesn’t sell fast. That’s the conclusion Jimeno has reached based on his experience of this market. “The homes that have sold are 40pc on average below the price of other properties for sale in the area,” he recently explained in an article in the Spanish press.

So who is selling? Vendors who bite the bullet and drop their prices to be the most competitively priced on the market. They tend to be people who really need to sell, like divorcees, people who have lost their jobs, or people who have to relocate.

It’s vendors like this that buyers should be targeting. “You can have a home for sale for months or even years, but until you drop your price to where the demand is, you can forget about selling,” says Jimeno, whose organisation sold more than 6,000 homes around Spain last year.

Potential buyers offer 23pc below asking prices in January

Idealista.com,  one of Spain’s leading property portals, has just published a survey showing the difference between asking prices and what house-hunters are offering.

On average, those looking to buy a property offered 23pc less than asking prices in January of this year, according to Idealista’s survey.

The biggest difference between asking prices and offers was found in the Malaga province, home to the Costa del Sol, where house-hunters offered 29%  less than prices being asked.

Differences of more than 25pc were also to be found in Girona (Costa Brava), Tarragona (Costa Dorada), Castellon (Costa Azahar), Murcia, and Almeria (Costa Calida), all popular locations with foreign holiday-home buyers.

So it seems there is still a big difference between vendor expectations and what buyers are prepared to pay.

Foreign television pays surprise visit to Nerja restaurant

A foreign television has visited Nerja to surprise a local restaurant. It appears to be another episode of Gordon Ramsey’s famous “Kitchen Nightmares” program, which was also in Nerja some time ago to record at a well known restaurant on the Burriana beach.

The producer has requested the assistance of the town hall but has called for the restaurant’s name to be kept secret because not even the owners know they will be shown in the program. Relatives abroad contacted the television station to prepare the surprise.

The presence of the TV crew in Nerja coincides with the celebration of the annual Carnival who took the opportunity to film moments of the festival, as well as other landmark in the town.

Antena 3 television secures Formula 1 Spanish TV rights for 2012

Formula 1 fans in Spain can breathe a sigh of relief as Antena 3 TV have secured the retransmission rights for this year and 2013.

Mediapro, who currently hold the rights from Bernie Ecclestone, have had up to now an agreement with La Sexta.  But huge losses incurred by the broadcaster prevented them from continuing this year due to non-payment, resulting in Mediapro offering the rights to the highest bidder amongst all the other channels in Spain. Antena 3 have secured the deal for a reported 40 million Euros a year. The new season starts in Melbourne on the 18th March.

There was however certain controversy surrounding the bid as Antena 3 is currently being merged with La Sexta. Mediapro had to provide guarantees to the CNC (equivalent to the Monopolies Commission in the UK), that the bidding would be transparent.
